Aluminium | How Do You Make It?

Aluminium is like a super strong, lightweight building block that we can shape into cans, planes, and even toy cars.

Imagine you have a big pile of rocks, hard to work with. But if you heat them up really hot, they become something easier to bend and mold. That’s what happens with aluminium. It starts as bauxite, which is like the rock version of aluminium, not quite ready to be used yet.

From Rock to Metal

First, we take the bauxite and put it in a big oven called a refinery. We add some water and heat it up so much that the aluminium inside comes out as a thick, gooey liquid called alumina. Then, we take that alumina and turn it into a powder.

Next, we mix this powder with some electricity and heat, kind of like giving it a big shake and a warm hug. This makes aluminium metal, which is soft enough to bend but strong enough to hold up a whole airplane!

So even though aluminium starts as a rock, with the right tools and a little help from heat and electricity, we can turn it into something amazing, just like turning a lump of clay into a beautiful sculpture.

  1. A child learns how aluminium is made from a mineral called bauxite, like turning ore into metal.
  2. Aluminium production is similar to cooking: you take raw ingredients and heat them up to make something new.
  3. Imagine making chocolate candy from cocoa beans, that's like turning bauxite into aluminium.
