Elevator manufacturers sometimes make it so the door close button doesn’t always work, like when you’re just about to get in and it slams shut on your toes!
Why the button might not work
Imagine you're playing with a toy car. You press the "go" button, but sometimes the car stays still because there's something blocking its path. That’s kind of what happens inside an elevator. The door close button is like that "go" button, it tells the doors to shut. But if someone is still getting in or out, or if the sensors see a person near the door, the elevator might ignore the button and wait for everyone to be safe.
What the manufacturers are thinking
It's not because they're being mean, it’s more like they’re being helpful! If the doors always closed no matter what, people could get hurt. So sometimes, the button feels like it doesn’t do anything, but that’s just the elevator making sure everyone gets in and out safely.
It’s a bit like when your teacher lets you finish your test even if the bell rings, they’re being kind to help you do your best!
