Imagine you're playing a game where numbers hide behind other things, and your job is to find them!
Hidden numbers are like toys that have gone missing under the couch, you know they’re there, but you need to dig to see them. Let’s say you have 10 toy cars, and you give 3 to your friend. You don’t see them anymore, but they're still hidden in your friend's room! If you want to know how many you have left, you do a little math: 10 - 3 = 7, that’s the hidden number you’re looking for!
How it works
Think of numbers as friends who can hide. When you take some away or put some more in, they still exist, but you need to find them again.
- If you start with 5 cookies and eat 2, you're left with 3. Those 3 are the hidden number.
- If you have 4 candies and get 2 more, now you have 6. That new total is your hidden number too!
It’s like counting your toys when some are under the bed, you just need to do a little math to find them!
Examples
- Finding the number of steps in a staircase without counting them all
- Recognizing that numbers are used to measure time on a clock face
- Seeing patterns in license plate numbers while riding in a car
