The Ancient Romans used coins to buy things just like we use money today.
Imagine you're at a market with your friend. You want to buy a toy, but you don’t have enough pennies in your piggy bank. So, you trade one of your bigger coins, maybe a silver coin, for the toy and some extra candy. That’s kind of what Romans did with their coins.
Coins Were Like Big and Small Piggy Bank Coins
Romans had different kinds of coins, like small ones made of bronze or big ones made of silver or gold. When they wanted to buy food, clothes, or even a horse, they gave the right number of coins to the seller, just like you give your mom some pennies and maybe one nickel when you want a snack.
Coins Also Helped People Know How Much Things Cost
If someone sold bread for 2 coins, everyone knew exactly what to pay. It was like having prices written on little signs at the store, except they used coins instead of numbers.
Sometimes, people even saved up their coins in special bags or jars, just like we save our money in piggy banks!
