Zero is like an empty box, it holds nothing, but it's still there. Imagine counting your toys: if you have 5 toys and give them all away, you're left with zero toys, not just nothing, but a special kind of 'nothing.' This idea made math much more powerful because now we can count the space between numbers too! Zero helped us create bigger numbers, like turning 9 into 10.
