How Did the Phoenicians Influence Modern Language?

The Phoenicians helped create letters that are still used today, like the ones in our alphabet.

Imagine you and your friend want to send a message to each other, but you can’t talk or write it down. That’s what happened with the Phoenicians, they needed a way to communicate over long distances, so they came up with symbols that stood for sounds. These were called alphabets.

Like Building Blocks

Think of letters like building blocks. The Phoenicians used about 22 of them, and these became the base for many other alphabets, including ours! For example, their letter “B” is like our “B,” and their “G” is just like our “G.” It’s like having a set of building blocks that you can use to make all kinds of words.

Letters Travel Far

When other people saw how useful these letters were, they borrowed them, kind of like when you share your toys with friends. The Greeks took the Phoenician alphabet and changed it a little, then the Romans did too. Eventually, we ended up with the 26 letters in our English alphabet today.

So next time you read or write, remember: the Phoenicians gave us the tools to do it, like giving everyone a super helpful set of building blocks!
