Credit cards have secret codes that help stop people from using them without permission.
Imagine your credit card is like a special key to a treasure box. When you use it at a store, the store checks if the key matches the one on file. If it doesn’t match, the treasure box won’t open, and the thief can't get your money!
How It Works
When you swipe or tap your card, it sends a message to the bank that says, “I want to use this card.” The bank checks if the message is real.
Sometimes, the bank asks for a secret number, like a PIN (a 4-digit code), just like how you might need a special code to open a toy box. If the person doesn’t know the code, they can't get your money!
Extra Protection
Some cards also use special pictures that change when you look at them, kind of like a magic sticker that only works under certain lights. This helps banks tell if someone is trying to copy your card.
So even if someone steals your card, it’s still hard for them to use it without the right codes or clues!
Examples
- A kid uses a credit card to buy candy, but the store can’t tell if it's really him or someone else.
- Your mom’s card gets stolen, but the store knows it wasn’t her because she didn’t type in her PIN correctly.
