How Do Crystals Form in Geology?

Imagine you have a box of tiny LEGO bricks. If you throw them on the floor, they are messy. But if you snap them together in a specific pattern, they become a sturdy structure. Crystals are like this: they are groups of atoms that arrange themselves in a neat, repeating pattern.

How It Starts

Crystals usually start forming when liquid turns into solid. Think about making rock candy. You have sweet water (sugar dissolved in water). As the water evaporates, the sugar molecules get crowded. They start sticking together in a specific order. This starting point is called a nucleus.

Growing Bigger

Once the nucleus exists, more atoms or molecules join the party. They line up perfectly with the first ones. This makes the crystal grow bigger and bigger.

The shape of the crystal depends on the shape of the atoms. Some atoms are round, some are square. This decides if the crystal looks like a cube, a pyramid, or a needle. It is nature’s way of keeping things tidy.
