How do earthquakes cause land uplift and coastal changes?

Earthquakes can make land rise up and change coasts, just like when you shake a jar of jelly and watch it squish around.

Imagine the ground is like a big cake, and deep inside it are layers that can slide. When an earthquake happens, these layers shift suddenly, kind of like how your bed shakes if you jump on it. This shaking can make parts of the land lift up, just like when you push up on one side of a sandwich.

If the land lifts up near the ocean, it's like pushing part of a bathtub higher, the water might pull back and leave the shore looking different. Sometimes, the sea can even go back from the shore for a moment, making it seem like the land has grown.

On the other side, if the ground drops or slides down, the sea might rush in and cover parts of the land that were once dry, kind of like how water spills over when you drop a glass. This can change beaches, make new ones, or even flood places that used to be safe.
