How do our brains create and perceive different colors?

Light is like a rainbow soup that hits your eyes. Your eyes have tiny helper cells called cones that taste different parts of that soup.

Think of your eye like a camera sensor. It has three types of cone cells. One type loves red light, one loves green, and one loves blue. When you look at a red apple, the red cones get very excited, but the green and blue cones stay quiet. Your brain sees this pattern and says, "Ah, red!"

It’s like having three friends: Reddy, Greenie, and Bluey. If Reddy jumps up and down while the others sit still, your brain knows it’s red.

How Your Brain Paints the World

Your brain is the artist. It takes the signals from the cones and mixes them like paint. If Reddy and Greenie jump together, your brain mixes red and green light to make yellow. If all three jump, you see white. If none jump, you see black.
