We use clues from the past like letters, paintings, and even tools. Just like you can tell what your friend is thinking by looking at their face or listening to them talk, we try to guess what people in ancient times thought by studying the things they left behind.
Examples
- A child finds a letter from 100 years ago where someone wrote they were excited to move to a new city.
- Archaeologists discover a drawing of a sun, and guess it meant something important to the person who made it.
- A historian reads about how an ancient king felt when his army lost a battle.
