Think of your brain as a bustling city where tiny messengers carry important notes from one building to another. These messengers are called neurotransmitters.

How the Message Travels

Imagine your brain cells are like houses with a small gap between them, called the synapse. When you decide to move your arm, an electrical signal travels down a wire-like part of the cell called the axon.

When that signal reaches the end, it knocks on the door of a tiny storage container called a vesicle. Think of this vesicle like a little backpack filled with notes. The signal tells the backpack to unzip and spill its contents into the gap. These contents are the neurotransmitters.

Just like you might slide a drawing under a neighbor's door, these chemicals float across the gap.

On the other side of the gap, the receiving cell has special pockets called receptors. These pockets are shaped exactly like the neurotransmitters, just like a key fits into a specific lock. When the neurotransmitter clicks into the receptor, it opens the door for the next message to travel on.

Cleaning Up

After the message is received, the body doesn't want the chemicals floating around forever. Some are sucked back into the sending cell to be reused, like returning a library book. Others are broken down into harmless pieces. This quick cleanup keeps the city organized so the next message can be sent clearly and fast.
