There are 7 continents on Earth, and they have names that people decided a long time ago, like naming your favorite toys.
How Many Continents Are There?
Imagine you're playing with a big puzzle map of the world. If you put together all the land parts that are not separated by water, you get 7 big pieces, those are the continents. Each one has its own name, just like each toy in your room has a different name.
How Were They Named?
People who lived on those lands gave them names based on where they were or what they saw. For example, Asia comes from an old word that meant "the east", because it was to the east of Europe. Africa started as a name for a part of North Africa, but now it covers much more.
Sometimes people named continents after famous leaders or places. Like America, which is named after a man called Amerigo Vespucci, he helped people realize that the new lands across the ocean were separate from Europe.
It’s like when you name your toy robot "Zippy" because it zips around, simple, fun, and easy to remember!
