How Does Abstraction vs. Realism Work?

Imagine looking at a picture. Sometimes it looks exactly like the real thing, and sometimes it uses simple shapes to tell the same story. This is the battle between Realism and Abstraction.

Realism is like a super detailed drawing of your favorite toy car. It shows every scratch, every shine on the metal, and the exact color of the tires. It tries to copy reality so you feel like you could reach out and touch it.

Abstraction is like a simple icon on a computer screen. It does not show every tiny detail. Instead, it uses basic shapes, like a red circle for a stop sign or a stick figure for a person. It leaves out the small stuff to show you the main idea.

Think of it this way:

• Realism is like a high-definition photo of your dog. You can count each whisker.
• Abstraction is like a quick doodle of your dog. It might just be a wiggly line for the body and two circles for eyes, but you still know it is your pet.

Both ways help us understand the world. One shows you exactly what things look like. The other shows you what things mean. Artists choose based on what they want you to notice.
