Angles are simply how much you have to turn to face a new direction.

Think of your arm. When your arm is straight out, it is flat like a table edge. That is a straight angle. When you fold your arm so your elbow points down, that bend is an acute angle because it is small and pointy, like the tip of a slice of pizza. If you bend your arm wide open, that is an obtuse angle, which is bigger than a corner but not quite flat. And when your arm forms a perfect L-shape, like the corner of your book or your room, that is a right angle.

Types of Angles

Angles help us describe shapes and directions. Here is how they work in everyday life:

  • Acute: Small and sharp, like the point of a star.
  • Right: Perfectly square, like the corner of a window.
  • Obtuse: Wide and open, like an open mouth saying "ah".
  • Straight: Flat like a ruler, like the edge of a door.

Angles are just measures of turn.

We use a tool called a protractor to measure them. It looks like a semi-circle ruler. You line it up with the point of the angle and see where the lines cross the numbers. This tells you exactly how many degrees you turned. Degrees are like steps on a clock. A full circle is 360 degrees. A half circle (straight angle) is 180 degrees. A quarter circle (right angle) is 90 degrees.
