How Does Every Part of an Engine Explained (in 15 minutes) Work?

An engine is like a hungry robot that turns fuel into movement.

The Four-Step Dance

Imagine a bicycle. You push the pedals to make the wheels spin. An engine does this automatically, but much faster. It repeats four steps over and over again.

  1. Intake: The engine opens its "mouth" (the valves) to suck in air and a tiny bit of gasoline. Think of taking a deep breath before running.
  2. Compression: The piston pushes up, squishing the air and fuel mixture tight. This makes the mix hot and ready to pop.
  3. Combustion: A tiny spark plug zaps the mix. Whoosh! It explodes. This push is what makes the car go. It’s like popping a balloon inside your hand.
  4. Exhaust: The used air goes out the back, just like breathing out after a big gulp.

The Team Players

The cylinder is the room where this dance happens. The piston is the dancer moving up and down. The crankshaft turns that up-and-down motion into spinning motion for the wheels.
