How Does Every Type of NBA Dunker Explained Work?

A dunk is simply throwing a basketball into a hoop that sits ten feet high by jumping up and dropping the ball from above the rim instead of shooting it from below.

Think of the hoop like the top rail of your bedroom window. If you throw the ball from the floor, you have to aim up past the bar. But if you jump high enough to reach over that bar, you can just drop the ball straight down into the window. That is a dunk! It looks cool because it feels powerful, like slamming a heavy door shut with your whole body instead of closing it gently.

How Different Dunkers Do It

Not all dunks happen the same way. Some players stand still and jump very high, like leaping over a tall fence from one spot. These are called slam dunks. They rely on pure height and strength.

Other players run fast before they jump, like a car speeding up before hitting a ramp. They slide their feet out to keep balance while flying through the air. This is often called a running dunk or a layup-style dunk. It feels smoother because they don't have to stop completely; they just use their speed to lift them upward, similar to how you glide on your skateboard before popping up onto the sidewalk curb.

Some dunkers do it with one hand and others with both hands holding the ball tight against their chest like a treasure. A one-handed dunk feels like grabbing a doorknob and twisting, while a two-handed dunk feels like hugging something strong. The most exciting dunks happen when you jump so high that everyone around you goes "Wow!" because you almost touched the ceiling.
