How Does Figurative Language- Puns Work?

A pun is when a word or phrase sounds like another one, and that makes you laugh or think in a fun new way.

Imagine you're playing with building blocks. You have a red block labeled "bear" and a blue block labeled "bare." They look almost the same, just a little different in color and spelling. When you say bear (the animal), it sounds like bare (not wearing anything). That's a pun, and it’s like when your blocks trick your brain into thinking one thing is another.

Puns work by using sound similarities between words. Just like how two blocks can look almost the same but be different, some words sound similar but have different meanings. When you hear a pun, it's like hearing a familiar song with a twist, you know the tune, but now there’s something new and funny in it.
