Genetic recombination is when pieces of DNA from two parents mix together to create new combinations of genes in their offspring.

Imagine you and your friend each have a puzzle with 10 pieces. You both put your puzzles together, but then you swap some pieces, maybe the ones that make the eyes or the hair color. When you put your mixed-up puzzle back together, it looks a little different from either of your original puzzles. That's kind of like what happens in genetic recombination.

Mixing Up the Puzzle Pieces

During reproduction, each parent gives half their DNA to the child. But before that happens, the DNA gets shuffled, just like when you mix up your puzzle pieces with your friend’s. This shuffling is called crossing over, and it helps make sure the child has a unique combination of traits from both parents.

A New Combination

Once the DNA is mixed up, each parent gives half to the child, who ends up with a brand new set of instructions, like a custom-made puzzle that’s different from either parent's. This is why siblings can look similar but still have some differences, they got slightly different mixes of genes from their parents.
