How Screens Make Light

Imagine your tablet screen is a window. Behind that window, there is a special panel that holds tiny light bulbs. These are called LEDs. Normally, these lights shine white, but we want colors. So, we place a colored filter over the window. This filter is like a piece of colored cellophane. If you hold red cellophane up to a white light, only red light passes through.

When you see a "glow," the screen is making some of those tiny lights shine very bright. Think of it like turning up the volume on a radio. When the volume is high, the sound feels bigger. When the screen lights are at max brightness, the color looks like it is glowing because it is pushing out as much light as it can. The computer tells the screen: "Make this pixel super bright!" and the pixel shines like a little star.

It is not magic; it is just electricity turning into light.
