Like a Game of "Where Are You?"
Imagine you're playing hide and seek with your friends in a big room. Each friend shouts out how far away they are from you, one says, “I’m 5 steps away!” Another says, “I’m 10 steps away!” By listening to all these clues, you can figure out where you’re hiding.
Underwater GPS is kind of like that game. Sonar, which works like echoes, helps underwater devices find their way. Instead of satellites, they use sound waves, and instead of messages in the air, they send “echoes” through water. These echoes tell them how far away things are.
A Real-Life Example
Think about a submarine. It sends out sound waves that bounce off the ocean floor or other objects. The submarine listens for those echoes coming back, just like you listen for your friends’ clues in hide and seek. By knowing how long it took for the echo to come back, the submarine can figure out where it is.
This special kind of GPS, called underwater GPS, helps submarines, divers, and even robots find their way when they’re far below the surface, no need for magic, just clever echoes!
