How Does Horizontal Shifts Work?

A horizontal shift is when a graph moves left or right on the paper, like sliding a toy car along a track.

Imagine you're playing with blocks. You have a red block that stands straight up, this is like a simple graph. Now, if you slide that red block to the right, it's still the same block, just in a new spot. That’s exactly what happens with a horizontal shift, the shape of the graph doesn’t change, but its position does.

Like Moving on a Playground

Think of a seesaw in the playground. The middle of the seesaw is like the center of your graph. If you move the whole seesaw to the right, it's still a seesaw, just shifted. That’s how a horizontal shift works: everything moves together, left or right.

A Simple Example

Say you have a line that goes from (0, 0) to (2, 4). If you shift this line 2 units to the right, every point on the line moves two steps toward the right. So (0, 0) becomes (2, 0), and (2, 4) becomes (4, 4). It's still the same line, just a little further along the path.
