Your phone has a tiny accelerometer inside that acts like a pendulum. Imagine a marble rolling around in a bowl. When you hold the phone still, gravity pulls the marble down to the bottom of the bowl. This tells the phone which way is down.
The Basics
When you turn your phone sideways, the marble rolls to the side. Your phone sees this shift and turns the picture or game with it. It knows the difference between falling off a table (moving fast) and just being tilted (slow movement).
How It Works
The sensor measures acceleration in three directions: left-right, forward-backward, and up-down. Gravity is always pulling down at about 9.8 m/s^2. If the phone stays still but rotates, gravity appears to come from a different angle. The phone uses math to figure out which way is truly 'down' even if you are sitting in a chair that moves slightly.
Why It Matters
This technology lets your phone know when to switch from reading mode to movie mode. Without it, videos would play sideways every time you held the phone differently!

- Holding a phone like a book makes the picture turn sideways, but keeping it flat keeps the video straight.
- Shaking the phone to scroll works because the sensor feels a quick movement, not just gravity.
