How does regression analysis work?

Regression analysis is like teaching your friend how to guess your age by looking at how many toys you have.

Imagine you and your friend play a game: every time you bring a new toy to school, your friend tries to figure out how old you are. At first, they might not be sure, but as you keep bringing more toys, they start seeing a pattern. Maybe the more toys you have, the older you seem to be.

Regression analysis helps us find that pattern. It's like giving your friend a special tool that lets them make better guesses each time they see a new toy. This tool looks at how toys (or any data point) and age (or any result we're trying to predict) are connected.

How it learns the pattern

Think of regression as drawing a line through dots on a graph, like connecting the dots when you're coloring inside the lines. The line shows how one thing affects another. If your friend draws this line well, they can guess your age just by counting your toys!
