Radiography can make things look squished or stretched because of shape distortion, like when you bend a straw and it looks funny in your drink.
Imagine you're taking a picture of a toy train on a track using a special camera, that’s like radiography. Now, if the train is going straight toward the camera, it might look shorter than it really is, that's foreshortening, like when you press your face close to a window and everything looks tiny.
But if the train is going around a curve, away from the camera, it might look longer, that’s elongation, like when you stretch a rubber band and it looks bigger than it is.
Why It Happens
The camera (or X-ray machine) takes pictures from one angle. If something is closer to the camera, it gets squished, foreshortened. If it's farther away or on an angle, it stretches out, elongated.
It’s like looking at a pencil from different angles. When you hold it up close, it looks short. When you tilt it sideways, it seems longer. That’s how shape distortion works in radiography!
Examples
- A broken leg X-ray shows the bone as longer than it is because of how the leg was positioned.
- When you take an X-ray of a finger, it might look shorter if it’s angled wrong.
