How Does Static Electricity Actually Work?

Static electricity is when things rub together and create a little electric charge that can make your hair stand up or shock you when you touch something.

Like a Party with Balloons

Imagine you have two balloons, one red and one blue. When you rub the red balloon on your head, it gets full of extra electrons, like it's at a party and everyone is crowding in. The blue balloon stays calm, no extra people, just normal. Now, if you bring them close together, they push apart because they both have too many people (or electrons) and don’t want to be near each other.

What Happens When You Touch Something

Now think of your socks on a dry carpet. When you walk across it, your feet rub against the carpet, and some extra electrons move from the carpet to your socks, just like when you rub a balloon on your head. Then, when you touch something metal, like a doorknob, all those extra electrons rush out in one big burst, and that’s what makes you feel a little shock, like a tiny lightning bolt!
