How Does The Enlightenment: John Locke Work?

John Locke was like a super smart teacher who showed people that they could think for themselves and make their own decisions.

Imagine you have a big cookie jar full of cookies. You don’t know how many are inside, but you can count them one by one as you take them out. That’s kind of what John Locke did with ideas, he said we all start with a blank mind (like an empty cookie jar), and then we learn things from the world around us.

John Locke believed that people are born with a clean slate, like a new cookie jar. As you grow up, life gives you cookies, or ideas, which fill your jar little by little. You might get cookies from playing with friends (fun ideas), from reading books (knowledge), or even from being scolded (lessons learned).

Thinking for Yourself

John Locke also believed that people should be free to think and choose what they believe, just like you can choose which cookie to take first. He thought that governments should protect this freedom, so everyone could have their own ideas and make decisions, not just one person telling everyone else what to do.

So John Locke was like a teacher who gave people the tools to think for themselves and live freely, with cookies (and ideas) along the way!
