Imagine you're playing hide-and-seek with your friend, and you know they’re trying to be quiet so they don’t get caught, that’s theory of mind, and Uta Frith helped us understand how our brains do this.
What Is Theory of Mind?
Theory of mind is like being able to guess what someone else is thinking or feeling, just like you know your friend wants to win the game. It means you can imagine that other people have thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, even if they’re different from yours.
How Uta Frith Helped Us See This
Uta Frith is a scientist who studied how our brains help us understand others. She used fun games and pictures, like when you try to figure out what another person sees or thinks based on clues. It’s like playing “I Spy”, you look at something and guess what it is based on hints.
She showed that theory of mind isn’t just magic, it’s a skill our brain learns over time, much like learning how to tie your shoes or ride a bike.
With Uta Frith's work, we now know that understanding other people’s thoughts is something we can learn and grow into, one game at a time!
