A volcanic eruption can change the weather, just like when you blow on a hot cup of soup and it gets cooler.
When a volcano erupts, it sends out a lot of smoke and tiny particles into the air, kind of like when you shake up a jar full of confetti and then open it. These particles are called aerosols, and they float high in the sky, blocking some of the sunlight from reaching Earth.
Like a Blanket Over the Planet
Think about it like this: the sun is like your favorite blanket that warms you up on a cold day. When there's a lot of smoke and particles in the air, it’s like someone put a thick, grey blanket over the whole planet. Less sunlight reaches us, so the Earth gets a little bit cooler.
This can happen for months or even years, kind of like how your room feels colder after you take off your favorite sweater. Sometimes this cooling effect is strong enough to make winter feel longer or even change the weather patterns around the world!
