How Does [What's the difference] Vasoconstriction vs. Vasodilation Work?

Vasoconstriction and vasodilation are ways blood vessels change their size to help your body stay healthy.

Vasoconstriction is when blood vessels get smaller, like when you squeeze a straw to make the drink flow slower. Imagine your blood vessels are like garden hoses, if they shrink, less water (or blood) can pass through at once. This happens when your body wants to keep heat in or send more blood to important places like your muscles during exercise.

Vasodilation is the opposite, it's when blood vessels get bigger, like stretching a rubber band to let more water flow through. If you're hot, your blood vessels widen so more blood can go to your skin to cool you down. It’s also how your body sends extra blood to your legs when you run.

Why It Matters

Your body uses these changes all the time, sometimes you don’t even notice! Like when you get a little chilly, your fingers might feel cold because their blood vessels are constricting. But when you warm up, they dilate again and the blood flows back in like a cozy blanket.
