Imagine your brain has two special helpers: Dopamine and Serotonin, who decide whether you want to play or take a nap.
Dopamine is like the kid in class who can’t sit still, it makes you feel excited, happy, and ready to try new things. When you get a sticker for doing your homework, Dopamine goes “Yay! I love this!” That’s why you might want to run around outside after school or ask to try a new game.
Serotonin is more like the calm friend who helps you stay focused. It makes you feel safe and happy inside, kind of like when you’re reading your favorite book before bedtime. When Serotonin is strong, you don’t get upset as easily, and you can go to sleep without any trouble.
How They Work Together
Dopamine pushes you to do things, while Serotonin helps you stay balanced. If one gets too loud or quiet, it can change how you feel all day, like when you're too excited to fall asleep or too tired to play your favorite game.
Sometimes, when Dopamine is high and Serotonin is low, that’s why you might get a little grumpy after eating too much candy!
Examples
- A child gets a sticker for finishing their homework (dopamine makes them want to keep going)
- Getting excited about a new video game (dopamine is the reason)
