How Does Earth Stay Warm at Night?

Imagine you are sleeping under a heavy winter quilt. The sun warms your body during the day, and if you took the quilt off at night, you would get cold quickly. Earth has its own giant quilt made of air that keeps it from freezing when the sun sets.

What is this Quilt?

The air around us is not empty. It is filled with invisible gases like carbon dioxide and water vapor. These gases act like glass in a greenhouse or the windows of your car. They let sunlight pass right through to warm up the ground, but they stop some of that heat from escaping back into space.

Why do we need it?

Without this natural blanket, Earth would be much colder. The sun heats the soil and oceans during the day. At night, everything tries to release that warmth as infrared radiation (which is a type of light you cannot see). Our atmosphere catches most of this outgoing heat and sends some of it back down, keeping the planet cozy. This process is called the greenhouse effect.

Is more blanket better?

Yes! If we add too many layers to our quilt by burning fossil fuels like coal and oil, the atmosphere gets thicker. A thicker blanket traps too much heat. This causes the Earth’s temperature to rise slowly over time, which scientists call global warming. It is like wearing a summer shirt in winter because your coat got too big.
