The Big Idea
Imagine you are trying to build a very tall house out of LEGOs. If the walls are too thick and solid, the windows have to be tiny because there is no space left for them. In medieval times, people first built houses with thick stone walls. These walls held up the roof, but they also blocked the light.
Changing the Game
Then, builders had a brilliant idea. Instead of relying only on the thick walls to hold everything up, they invented something called a flying buttress. Think of these as invisible arms reaching out from the outside of the building to catch the roof and stop it from falling down.
The Result
Because the outside arms were doing some of the heavy lifting, the walls didn't need to be so thick anymore. This meant builders could make huge windows! They filled these big windows with colorful glass pictures that told stories about saints and kings. Suddenly, churches weren't just dark boxes; they became bright, tall, and shiny places where people felt like they were reaching up toward heaven. It was like upgrading from a cozy but dim basement to a sparkling palace with giant skylights.
Examples
- Builders use outside arms to hold the weight so the inside walls can be made thinner.
