An elliptical orbit is like when a planet takes a squiggly path around the Sun instead of a perfect circle.

Imagine you're on a swing. When you pump your legs, you go higher and higher, that’s like going far from the Sun. Then, as you come back down, you’re closer to the center again, that's like being near the Sun. A planet in an elliptical orbit does something similar: it zooms out to a point called aphelion, then zooms back in to a point called perihelion, just like your swing moves up and down.

Like a stretched-out circle

An ellipse is a shape that's kind of like a circle, but it’s been stretched or squished. Think of it as a pizza that someone pulled on the sides, not round anymore, but still smooth. The Sun isn’t always in the exact center of this stretched-out path, sometimes it’s a little off to one side.

So, when Earth goes around the Sun, most of the time its orbit is an ellipse, just like how your swing moves up and down instead of going in a perfect circle. That's why we have seasons: when we're closer to the Sun, it feels warmer, and when we're farther away, it feels cooler!
