Is the Ship Still a Ship?

Imagine your favorite wooden toy. Every year, a piece breaks, so you glue it back with new wood. Years later, every single piece of original wood is gone. Is it still your old toy? This is the Ship of Theseus. It asks if something stays itself when it changes.

A famous story tells about a ship that sailed for centuries. As parts rotted, sailors replaced them with new planks and masts. Some people say because the shape never changed, it is the same ship. Others say because no original wood remains, it is a totally new ship.

You change every day. Your cells die and are replaced. Are you still you? Most of us feel we are. We remember being children, even if our bodies look different now. Identity feels like a story that continues, not just a pile of materials.
