The Speed of Light: How Fast Does It Really Go?

Light is like a super-fast race car that never stops moving. It zips through space at a fixed speed, which we call the speed of light. This speed is incredibly fast, about 300,000 kilometers every single second.

Imagine throwing a ball. The ball travels in a straight line until it hits something. Light behaves similarly, but it does not need air or ground to push against. It travels through the empty vacuum of space without any help.

Think of light as a ripple in a pond. When you drop a stone, the ripples move outward. Light is like those ripples, but instead of water, the "water" is an invisible field called an electromagnetic field. This field exists everywhere, even in empty space. When light moves, it creates tiny ripples in this field. These ripples carry energy from one place to another.

Light always travels at this constant speed. It does not speed up or slow down in a vacuum. This consistency is why we can measure distances in space using light-years. One light-year is the distance light travels in one year.
