The Big Boom
Imagine you're sitting in a chair, and someone gives it a really hard push. That's what happened to Mount St. Helens. A lot of pressure built up inside the mountain because hot rocks and gases were pushing against the sides like a balloon being blown up too much. Then, boom!, the top of the mountain shot out in a big cloud, like a volcano coughing really hard.
What Came Next
After that big explosion, there was a lot of mud and rock sliding down the side of the mountain, like when you tip over a sandcastle and everything falls into the water. This mud covered the ground nearby, making it look like someone had painted the land with thick brown paint.
Dr. Steve Austin watched all this happen, just like how we watch rain fall from the sky, he studied what happened after the big boom to learn more about earth's power and how mountains can be both strong and wild.
