Adaptive structures are buildings or objects that can change shape or function to help people live better.
Imagine your favorite backpack, it has pockets for your lunch, pencil case, and maybe even a water bottle. Now think of a backpack that grows bigger when you need more space, like when you’re going on a long trip. That’s kind of what adaptive structures do! They can change to fit new needs.
Like a Smart House
Think about your house. If it were an adaptive structure, maybe the walls could move apart to make bigger rooms during parties or close up to save space when no one is home. The roof might get taller in summer so you feel cooler and shorter in winter to keep you warm, just like how a blanket gets pulled closer on a cold night.
Like Your Favorite Shoes
Shoes are another good example! Some shoes can stretch as your feet grow, or they have special parts that help you walk more comfortably. These are adaptive structures too, they change with you so you stay happy and comfortable.
Adaptive structures make life easier by changing with our needs, just like a smart backpack, house, or shoes would!
