What are Oligomers?
Imagine you have a handful of red LEGO bricks. Usually, they float around alone. But sometimes, three or four bricks snap together to make a little group. This small group is an oligomer. It is not a giant tower, just a small team working together.
Why do they stick?
Think of how Velcro sticks. It is not glue; it is tiny hooks catching on loops.
Proteins have sticky spots. When the right proteins meet, their sticky spots click together. Two proteins make a dimer. Three make a trimer. Five or six make a pentamer or hexamer. These are all types of oligomers.
Why It Matters
These small groups do special jobs. For example, some cell doors only open when four protein bricks lock together. If they stay alone, the door stays shut. If they stick too much, they clump into big messy balls, which can be bad for health. But the just-right small groups are helpful helpers in your body.
