What are billions of years?

A billion years is a stretch of time so vast that it is hard to picture, but you can understand it by comparing it to things you know, like your age or the seasons changing.

Imagine your favorite toy block tower. If building that tower takes you one minute, then one billion years is like building one billion of those towers, one after another. If you built one tower every single day since you were born, you would still be far from finishing. That is how long a billion years is.

Think about your birthday candles. If you were 5 years old, a billion years is like having 200,000 birthdays. That is more birthdays than all the people in your whole city combined.

You can count to ten on your fingers. You can count to one million if you write it down. But counting to one billion takes more time than you have lived so far.

So when we say "billions of years," we mean a time span that includes the formation of mountains, the drifting of continents, and the life of dinosaurs. It is not a short nap. It is a journey longer than all the kings and queens in history put together.
