Water molecules love to stick to each other, so they huddle together into spheres to avoid touching the surface.

Most things are hydrophilic, which means they love water. Paper and cotton towels are hydrophilic because they soak up liquid quickly. Hydrophobic surfaces do the opposite. They push water away.
