What are kinematic doppler shifts?

Kinematic Doppler shifts are like when a sound changes pitch because something is moving toward or away from you.

Imagine you're playing tag with your friend. When your friend is running toward you, their voice sounds higher, it's like they're shouting "Tag! Tag!" in a really excited way. But when they run away, their voice sounds lower, more like "Tag… tag…" as they get further and further.

This is exactly what happens with sound waves or light waves, depending on whether we’re talking about sound or light. If something is moving toward you, the waves bunch up, making them seem higher (for sound) or bluer (for light). If it’s moving away, the waves stretch out, making them seem lower (for sound) or redder (for light).

Think about an ambulance passing by. As it comes toward you, its siren sounds higher, then as it goes past and moves away, the siren sounds lower. That’s a real-life example of a Doppler shift!
