What are megathrust earthquakes?

Megathrust earthquakes are like when two giant pieces of Earth’s crust suddenly push together and slide past each other, super strong and super loud, just like when you slam your hands against a table really hard.

Like a giant bookshelf falling over

Imagine a big, heavy bookshelf full of books. The shelf is on the floor, but one side is pushed up by something below it. When that push happens, boom!, the shelf tips over and all the books crash down. That's kind of what happens with megathrust earthquakes.

Earth’s crust moving like a giant puzzle

Earth has big pieces called tectonic plates. Sometimes, one plate pushes up against another really hard, like two puzzle pieces that are stuck together but want to move in different directions. After being stuck for a long time, maybe even hundreds of years, they finally give way all at once. That sudden movement shakes the ground and causes an earthquake, sometimes very big ones.

These earthquakes can cause tsunamis too, like when you drop a rock into a pond and waves ripple out, only much bigger!
