What are multiples?

Multiples are numbers you get when you count by skipping some steps, just like counting stairs or jumping rope.

Imagine you're climbing a staircase. Each step is one number. If you take two steps at a time, the numbers you land on are 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on. These are called the multiples of 2 because you’re counting by 2s.

Like Jumping Rope

Now picture yourself jumping rope. If you jump once for every beat of music, and the song has a rhythm that goes 1-2-3-4, then you're counting by 4s. The numbers you hit, 4, 8, 12, 16, are called the multiples of 4.

You can do this with any number! If you count by 5s while eating cookies, 5, 10, 15, 20, those are the multiples of 5. It's like having a special way to count that helps you see patterns in numbers.

Multiples are everywhere, just look around and start counting! Multiples are numbers you get when you count by skipping some steps, just like counting stairs or jumping rope.
