What are populations of organisms?

Imagine a big, cozy apartment building. Each apartment has one family living inside. Now, imagine all the families of the same type, like all the Smiths or all the Joneses, living in that same building. In nature, a population is like a group of the same kind of animal or plant living in the same neighborhood. They are neighbors who share the same playground and the same food sources.

Why Neighbors Matter

Think of your favorite cereal box. If you have only one bowl of cereal, it is easy to finish it all by yourself. But if you have a whole room full of people eating that same cereal, they have to share.

A population is a group of the same species living in one place. For example, all the squirrels in Central Park form a squirrel population. They talk to each other, find the same acorns, and raise their babies together.

Why does this matter?

  1. If there are too many squirrels, they might run out of food.
  2. If there are too few, they might not find mates to start families.

It is like a team on a soccer field. The team works best when the number of players is just right. Too many, and they bump into each other. Too few, and they cannot cover the field. Nature balances this number using food, space, and weather.
