What are surface features?

Surface features are the things you can see or feel on the outside of something, like a toy or a mountain.

Imagine you have a ball, it's smooth and round. Now imagine you draw lines and shapes on it with markers. Those lines and shapes are surface features because they're part of what makes the ball look different from other balls.

Like a Playground

Think of a playground. The swings, slides, and sandpit are all surface features of the playground, they’re things you can see and touch when you go there. Each one is special in its own way: the slide is for sliding, the swing is for swinging, and the sandpit is for digging.

Or think of a cookie. A plain cookie has just one surface feature, it's flat and round. But if it has chocolate chips or sprinkles on top, those are also surface features because they're part of what makes the cookie look and feel different from other cookies.

So, surface features are like the special parts that make something stand out, whether it’s a toy, a mountain, or even your favorite snack!
