Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that can get into our bodies and might affect how we feel.
Imagine you're eating a bowl of cereal, but instead of just milk and oats, there are also tiny bits of plastic floating around, like the crumbs from a broken toy. These little bits are called microplastics, and scientists have been studying them to see if they can make us sick.
How microplastics get into our bodies
Microplastics can be found in things we eat and drink, like water, salt, and even food like seafood. They're so small that they’re hard to see, kind of like the dust you sweep under the couch. When we swallow them, they go into our stomachs and might travel through our bodies.
What scientists have found
New studies show that microplastics can cause some problems in the body, like inflammation (which is like a sore throat but inside), and maybe even affect how our organs work. It's still being studied, but it looks like we're eating more of these tiny plastic bits than ever before, kind of like eating a whole bag of cereal for breakfast!
Examples
- Microplastics could be the reason why we're getting sick more often.
