What are tones?

Tones are different ways that sounds can change, just like how your voice changes when you say something excitedly or sleepy.

Imagine you have a bell in your room. When you ring it gently, it makes a soft sound, like a whisper. But if you hit it hard, it rings out loud, like shouting. That’s tone changing based on how much force you use.

Now think about when you play with a toy drum. If you tap it lightly, it makes one kind of sound. If you hit it strongly, it makes another kind. Each way you hit the drum is a different tone, just like your voice changes when you speak softly or loudly.

You can also change tones by changing how long you make the sound, like holding a note for longer or letting it go quickly. It’s like drawing with crayons: short, quick strokes are one kind of tone, and longer, slow strokes are another.

So, tone is all about how sounds feel when they're made, loud or soft, long or short. And just like you can change your voice, you can change the tone of any sound!
