What are user roles and permissions?

A user role is like a special job in a game, and permissions are the things that job lets you do.

Imagine you're playing with your friends in a big toy store. Each friend has a different job: one is the cleaner, another is the chooser of toys, and you might be the tester. The cleaner can only pick up toys, the chooser can take any toy they want, and the tester gets to try out all the toys, but can't take them home. These jobs are your user roles, and what each job lets you do is your permissions.

In real life, when people use computers or apps, they also have different user roles like teacher, student, or admin. Each role has permissions, which are the things they can do. For example:

• A teacher might be able to add new students.
• A student can only see their own work.
• An admin can change rules for everyone.

It’s like having special keys: some keys let you open just one door, others let you open many doors, and each key is given based on your job in the game.
