What are wide rectangles?

Wide rectangles are shapes that are long and flat, like a piece of paper or a ruler.

Imagine you have a toy block that's tall and narrow, it’s like a tower. Now, if you stretch that block out until it becomes really long and thin, it turns into a wide rectangle. It’s still a rectangle, but one side is much longer than the other.

Like a Popsicle Stick

Think of a popsicle stick, it's flat and long. That’s just like a wide rectangle! If you lay it on the floor, it covers more space along its length than its width. You can even draw on it, or use it to build things with your blocks.

Comparing to Other Shapes

A square is like a wide rectangle that has all sides equal, it's perfectly balanced. But if one side gets longer while the other stays the same, you get a wide rectangle. It’s not as stretched out as a really long ruler, but still clearly longer than it is wide.

So remember: a wide rectangle is just something that’s long and flat, like your favorite popsicle stick!
